When you stop to think about a fear that one may have, you may not realize how deep the fear goes. When a person has a fear of something, it is their body's way of adjusting to an emotional response that usually feels threatening or dangerous to them.
Many people have a fear or phobia of going to a doctor or dentist appointment while others may fear that they will be diagnosed with cancer. Anytime that you see the word "phobia" at the end of a word, it means that there is a fear of that specific thing. For example a person who has a Carcinophobia is fearful of being diagnosed with cancer.
One of the most prevalent phobias among people are of spiders. A person who is fearful of spiders is said to have Arachnophobia. There have even been movies created about this type of fear.
In order for a person to have a "true" phobia, it means that their fear is so great that it hinders them from doing anything related to that phobia. For example, a person who has Aerophobia, is fearful of flying. Acrophobia is a name that is given to those who are afraid of heights.
When someone has a fear, is can be an external, internal or subconscious fear. An external fear is when you are afraid of something outside of your being, like spiders or flying. An internal fear is when you are fearful that you will not be able to accomplish things in your life while a subconscious fear may prohibit you from achieving success. The key to overcoming fear is by not letting it control your life.
