Types of Fear

Fear is something that everyone experiences at one time or another. Some people get over it quickly as soon as they determine the threat, or whatever made them fearful, is gone. On the other hand, others have fears they live with on a day-to-day basis.

People are afraid of a multitude of different things. People are afraid of heights, afraid of water, afraid of dogs and there more fears than we have room to print here. How they deal with these fears is what defines the person’s character.

Experts say there are two types of fear: Unhealthy and healthy. You have to know if what you are afraid of is healthy or unhealthy and then dealing with it. There are fears that we can do something about and that we can change what we are fearful of happening.

If we are terribly afraid of something that we can do nothing about and allow the fear to paralyze us, it then moves from a fear to a phobia. And this will take more serious work to get over.

Many are fearful of getting ill. This is a healthy fear and you can do something about it by having physical examinations and seeing your doctor on a regular basis. Fears are emotional feelings and we do have control of them if we will allow ourselves to.

First and foremost, you need to recognize what is making you fearful and then decide if you can do something about it or not. If you can do something, then do it. If you can’t, then you need to try and quiet your fears and go on with your life. Being afraid of something you cannot fix is counterproductive for all involved.
