Phobias

When you stop to think about a fear that one may have, you may not realize how deep the fear goes. When a person has a fear of something, it is their body's way of adjusting to an emotional response that usually feels threatening or dangerous to them.

Many people have a fear or phobia of going to a doctor or dentist appointment while others may fear that they will be diagnosed with cancer. Anytime that you see the word "phobia" at the end of a word, it means that there is a fear of that specific thing. For example a person who has a Carcinophobia is fearful of being diagnosed with cancer.

One of the most prevalent phobias among people are of spiders. A person who is fearful of spiders is said to have Arachnophobia. There have even been movies created about this type of fear.

In order for a person to have a "true" phobia, it means that their fear is so great that it hinders them from doing anything related to that phobia. For example, a person who has Aerophobia, is fearful of flying. Acrophobia is a name that is given to those who are afraid of heights.

When someone has a fear, is can be an external, internal or subconscious fear. An external fear is when you are afraid of something outside of your being, like spiders or flying. An internal fear is when you are fearful that you will not be able to accomplish things in your life while a subconscious fear may prohibit you from achieving success. The key to overcoming fear is by not letting it control your life.

Fear: Real or Imagined?

Fear is both constructive and destructive, as it guides our lives, and can also destroy them. Fear is a primal emotion, with us from birth. It is also an emotion that we learn. From the moment we are born, our brains begin to record events. Both good and bad are recorded in our mental data banks. This information is what we use to create our fear responses.

As a child, we learn that touching a hot surface causes pain, and we learn to fear that action. Normally, this creates a guard response, which helps to keep us safe. We also learn about the "Boogie Man;" this is a false or imagined fear. Many imagined fears are created in our subconscious, and we are not aware the seed is planted until it surfaces. Many fears are acquired or learned from life experiences. An example of imagined fear is Vitricophobia, the fear of stepfathers. Others can include a fear of water or high places; this kind can be beneficial, as they help us to stay safe. When a fear becomes too intense, it turns into a phobia and begins to disrupt our lives.

Some fears are not learned however; physical damage or a chemical imbalance in the brain causes them. When the brain's ability to send information is modified, this can generate fear responses. Most often this kind of fear can be treated and often cured. A fear of the dark, or high places, is not a bad thing. You think twice before crawling into a dark cave, or walking close to the edge of a cliff. Being afraid of the Easter bunny however is not a constructive fear; this type of fear is usually overcome by a small child. If you are an adult with this problem, there might be a problem.

What is Fear ?

Fear is a natural response to threats and danger. There are said to be different types of fear for different stimuli which make the body react differently in terms of heart rate and blood flow.

The body goes through tremendous changes during the state of fear. The facial features go in different directions such as the eyebrows and lips. The heart rate jumps up and muscles tighten preparing for the fight or flight aspect of fear. The salivary glands do not act normal and sweating begins. These symptoms, so to speak, vary depending on the state of fear. For instance, the type of fear that one may feel during a time of mistrust toward a stranger or a swing set with rusty chains can be far different than being face to face with an 800 pound wild lion. Feelings of mistrust can cause a person to be cautious and wary rather than running in fear for their life. Face to face with a lion can also be different than a feeling of paranoia or panic in terms of the body’s response, because as terror can make the people react without much thought, panic is a feeling of anticipation which can help with a planned response. Nonetheless, definitions vary accordingly as do each individual’s response. When surveyed, people have reported that they fear such things as insects, terrorism, gangs, and the future, among many others. While different people fear different things, the capacity to fear is human nature.

It is thought that those who fear certain things are more likely to live longer and reproduce. This, to scientists, is known as natural selection as often times, the fearless are not ready for what might happen and perish as a result.
